I once started anonline personalised products company. The experience was a long and arduous one, but it turned out to be my light bulb moment. For the first time I was able to truly understand what anonline business was and, most importantly, what truly mattered when it came to succeeding online.
Business students today are taught that business is the key to status, an increased or secondary income, and becoming one’s own boss. But at its core, business is the very opposite. For example, the head of an organisation is never his or her own boss; their boss is the customer. These misconceptions and erroneous beliefs about business lead to frustration and dissatisfaction. In many cases, the more success you attain, the more tired and stressed you become, and the less time you have for what matters most: building your online business architecture, processes and structures to ensure sustainable growth and increased capability to take advantage of opportunities.
As previously stated, a company’s real boss is the customer – because business is really solving a problem or meeting the need of a person who, in exchange, rewards you for your value to them. Whatever the solution you deliver, the more people require it, and the better you are at making, improving and distributing it, the greater your rewards. Essentially, online business is a formula, whereby Problem + Solution x Organisation = Rewards.
Online business is neither starting a shop nor having a great idea. I have an idea of a flying stove – now tell me, does that solve a problem? You might say it’s art, it’s poetry, it’s the next phase in human development. Call it what you want, the reality is that no one (yet) has a need for that. (Don’t bother, I have patented it.) The idea is, we should never rush in starting our own business. It is a very important decision, and an undertaking that consumes most of any entrepreneur’s time.
Online business is science and a skill, with many facets and essential processes – including (but not limited to):
- Marketing: “the one thing that matters most for whether your business succeeds or fails miserably” according to Success Magazine editor, Darren Hardy
- Organisation: the more organised you are, the more problems you will be able to solve and therefore the more rewards you receive
- Thinking big: additionally the bigger the problem you solve the bigger your rewards and value to the market place
Something Even Greater
Nonetheless, there is an even greater truth, at work in the life of every manager, freelancer and entrepreneur. Every individual has a clear, distinct gift, and a unique set of abilities that were given to solve specific human needs. The key to enjoying what you do on a daily basis is to develop those gifts and abilities, and then learn the Online business skills that will allow you to deliver your designated solution to the right people, at the right time, in the right way, in exchange for the right rewards.
Instead of the standard approach to online business, I propose that Passion + Gift x Organisation = Rewards.
Discovering your natural gifts and passion is the most beneficial, timesaving thing you can do; do some soul searching and pray about it. Think – what is that problem that I hate and want to solve at all costs? What am I good at? What would I gladly do for free? How can I use these my talents to help others? In combining your answers, you will discover your ultimate source of harmony and real fulfilment.
What you must then do is set out to serve your assigned solution to world. Start by giving it for free so you can develop and improve it, and the little by little as you patiently grow, the right moment will come. King Solomon once said “A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.” It is serving your gift that promotes and brings you to the echelon of applause. Think of the greatest men and women you know and ask yourself one simple question: What made them great? Was it their school, their titles, or their unique gifts and abilities that they served to this world? Let me be bold to say that you will never find true fulfilment, balance and rest if you are not doing what your where born to do. Jesus puts it this way “The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
